Skip digs a bomb shelter

Aug 25. I haven't seen my african desert tortoise 3 times in over a week. He's dug a tunnel under the backyard so deep I can't see where it goes. The excavated sand is over a foot deep and grows daily as he digs, covering potted plants. Today I finally saw him emerging and grabbed him. In picking him up, I unwittingly stepped on and through his tunnel sinking over a foot into it. I placed him in the kids' pool where he immediately dunked his head and drank deeply for over a minute. After his bath he ate while a visiting friend's new baby sat atop him. The baby enjoyed the ride bare-shell (no saddle yet). I'm glad to see he's made a deep hideaway from the heat and hope he doesn't dig an exit outside the fence, which they are known to do. When he saw my tunnel damage he immediately began re-digging. Click to enlarge the pic for all you nerds (like me) who want to see the sand flying behind this digging dinosaur.

Methinks your friends' baby needs more fiber in her diet. Looks a little stiff...
